“My Turn to Wait” in the final print issue of QUARTERLY WEST

(I’d credit this cover artist if the magazine was in front of me.)

The new Quarterly West is out, a double-issue with new writing by Rae Armantrout, Alyssa Nutting, Greg Gerke, and a story I wrote called “My Turn to Wait.” It’s about wanting babies and not wanting babies and obtaining babies illegally and wanting monkeys and hoping babies will be monkeys. It felt like a big step for me when I wrote it 3 years ago, like I’d figured out how to be manic and controlled simultaneously. For the longest time it bore the widely unpopular title “Shaved Apes as Babies.”

Quarterly West isn’t putting out more print issues. Boo! They’re moving online starting September 21. Yay!
