I saw the best play last week: The Missoula Oblongata‘s production of “The 50 Greatest Ladies and Gentlemen,” now playing in NYC. It’s about a soldier, the burst of WWI optimism, individuality, tarantism, brothers, submarines. The troop combines a ramshackle aesthetic with tight choreography. It’s wildly inventive, with pleasures at every turn: live music, audience clamor, turn-crank storyboarding, silhouettes, puppets, and the sort of enthusiastic performances you rarely find outside of children’s theatre. I was delighted.
